THE WEEK AHEAD

April 20, 2026

GM. This is flowframe, the only newsletter that treats the prediction market calendar the way your college roommate treated the NFL Sunday slate, circling the games that matter and ignoring everything else.

Here's what we've got for you today:

⏰ The Iran ceasefire expires Tuesday night

• ️ The strait is "open" but tanker traffic is still down 90%

• Bitcoin is flirting with $75K and traders are split on $80K

• ️ The Iowa and California governor primaries are heating up

• ️ Oil could swing 10% either direction based on one phone call

This is the most consequential week since the ceasefire started. The two-week truce between the US and Iran expires Tuesday at 8 PM ET. Either a second round of Islamabad talks produces enough progress to extend it, or the war restarts. Every other market on this list is downstream of that question. Oil, gas, Bitcoin, the Hormuz strait, the recession odds, all of it moves based on what happens in Pakistan by Tuesday night. Islamabad is prepped for negotiations. Billboards are up near the Serena Hotel. Neither delegation has officially arrived yet.

IRAN CEASEFIRE EXTENSION

The market: Will the US-Iran ceasefire be extended beyond April 22? Platform: Polymarket Current odds: ~50% YES Volume: $21M+ across Iran war markets

Why it matters this week: The ceasefire expires Tuesday at 8 PM ET. The first round of Islamabad talks lasted 21 hours and ended without a deal. Vance, Witkoff, and Kushner led the US side. The sticking points were uranium enrichment (US wants 20-year moratorium, Iran offered 5 years) and Hormuz control. Pakistan's Field Marshal Munir visited Tehran this week to bridge the gap. The White House says Vance will return to Islamabad "in the coming days" but neither side has confirmed delegations are on the ground.

The number to know: 21 hours. That's how long the first round lasted. If the second round starts Monday and runs long, we could get a deal announcement or extension at the last minute -- exactly the pattern Trump has followed with every previous deadline.

What moves the line: Any official confirmation of delegations arriving in Islamabad pushes YES hard. If Tuesday hits with no talks underway, NO takes over fast.

STRAIT OF HORMUZ TRAFFIC BY END OF MAY

The market: Strait of Hormuz traffic returns to normal by end of May? Platform: Polymarket Current odds: 80% YES Volume: $1.09M

Why it matters this week: Iran declared the strait "completely open" Friday. Oil plunged. But tanker transits are still 90% below pre-war levels. Nine tankers got through last week. Pre-war, it was 50-60 daily. The US Navy blockade of Iranian ports turned back 13 ships. Iran attacked ships in the strait over the weekend. And Hapag-Lloyd, the German shipping giant, said it needs 6-8 weeks to resume normal operations, which pushes past the May 31 deadline even if everything goes perfectly.

The number to know: 90%. That's how far below normal the current traffic still is. "Completely open" and "back to normal" are very different things when there are sea mines in the water.

What moves the line: If the ceasefire extends and mine-clearing operations begin this week, 80% holds or climbs. If the ceasefire collapses Tuesday and Iran re-closes the strait, this drops to 40% overnight.

BITCOIN HITS $80K IN APRIL

The market: Will Bitcoin hit $80,000 by April 30? Platform: Polymarket Current odds: 31% YES Volume: $32.3M

Why it matters this week: Bitcoin is at $74,726 as of yesterday. It needs a 7% move in 10 days. Normally that's a coin flip for Bitcoin. But right now BTC is trading as a macro asset, not a speculative one. If the ceasefire extends and oil drops, risk assets rally -- and BTC leads the charge. If the ceasefire collapses and oil spikes, BTC takes a hit alongside stocks.

The number to know: $74,726. That's the current price. The gap to $80K is about $5,300. Bitcoin has moved that much in a single day before. But it hasn't done it in this macro environment.

What moves the line: A ceasefire extension Tuesday would be the single biggest catalyst. Traders are also watching the Fed, Warsh's confirmation hearing is this week and he's considered more hawkish than Powell. If Warsh signals tighter policy, BTC pulls back.

IOWA GOP GOVERNOR PRIMARY

The market: Iowa Republican Governor nominee? Platform: Kalshi Current odds: Feenstra 69%, Steen 16%, Lahn 16% Volume: $49.6K

Why it matters this week: Cook Political Report moved the general election to "tossup" two weeks ago. Feenstra still won't debate. The Family Leader is organizing for Steen. Lahn has the MAHA lane and his own money. The primary is June 2, but the next few weeks are when endorsements drop and candidates either consolidate or fade. The big outstanding question: does Trump endorse Feenstra? He rode Air Force One with him but hasn't pulled the trigger.

The number to know: 69%. That's Feenstra's Kalshi odds, down from ~80% in February. The drift is slow but steady. If it crosses below 60%, the race narrative changes from "frontrunner" to "vulnerable."

What moves the line: A Trump endorsement ends this race. A debate where Feenstra shows up (or notably doesn't) could also move things. Watch for any Iowa-specific polling this week.

CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR

The market: California Governor winner? Platform: Kalshi Current odds: Steyer 53%, Porter 14% Volume: $21.1M

Why it matters this week: Swalwell dropped out last Sunday after sexual assault allegations. Steyer surged from 16% to 53% in five days on pure money advantage -- he's spent $110M on TV ads. But polls haven't confirmed the prediction market move yet. This week we should see the first post-Swalwell polls. If they show Steyer consolidating Democratic support, 53% holds. If the field is still fragmented with six Democrats splitting the vote, the two-Republican nightmare scenario stays alive.

The number to know: $110M. That's what Steyer has spent on TV ads. The next-closest Democrat can't match it. But as one strategist put it: he's "wearing out his welcome."

What moves the line: Post-Swalwell polls. If Pelosi, Schiff, or Padilla endorse one candidate this week, that reshuffles everything. Also watch whether Swalwell formally resigns from Congress -- 55 former staffers have demanded it.

ALSO ON THE RADAR

US recession in 2026 -- Kalshi -- 34% -- Climbed from 25% to 34% during the war. If the ceasefire collapses and oil spikes again, this crosses 40%.

US x Iran diplomatic meeting by April 21 -- Polymarket -- 50% -- The direct bet on whether delegations physically meet in Islamabad before the ceasefire expires.

Fed Chair Warsh confirmation -- Kalshi -- Watch for new markets. Warsh's hearing is this week. He's considered more hawkish than Powell. Crypto and rate-sensitive markets react to his tone.

Congress is eyeing prediction markets for insider trading rules. A Polymarket user made $400K correctly predicting Maduro's ouster. Lawmakers want to know how. Kalshi and Polymarket spent a combined $975K on lobbying in 2025. (Source: CNBC)

Hapag-Lloyd says it needs 6-8 weeks to resume normal Hormuz transit even if the strait stays open. Insurance premiums, mine-clearing, and route verification all take time. "Completely open" ≠ "back to normal." (Source: Reuters)
